Egyptian Pyramids: The Mysterious Air Shafts
Aligned with the stars
In 1964, it was found by Egyptologist Dr. Alexander Badawi and his team that the air shafts carried even more significance by pointing to some stars known to be important for the ancient Egyptian religion. The shaft at the southern side of Pharaoh Khufu’s chamber is pointing to the belt of Orion which is known for its connection to the Egyptian god of the dead.
On the other hand the northern shaft of the King’s chamber has been found pointing to the star ‘Thuban’ while the shaft of the queen’s chamber is pointing toward the star ‘Kochab’. For this reason, the shafts of this pyramid are also termed as the star shafts.
If you take a site map of the Giza pyramid and draw three lines over the air shafts, you can find the interesting connection between them and the stars by yourself. This gives a strong significance of the making of the shafts. Experts say that the purpose might be to allow the king’s soul to go out of the tomb and unite with the stars that the shafts are pointing toward.
Symbolic connection to the Orion belt
The connection between the air shafts and the Orion belt has developed a more interesting theory regarding the location of the pyramids. That is- the pyramids including the Giza pyramid and the others around it represent the Orion belt on Earth. The experts refer the pyramid situated in the south of Giza is the symbol of “Bellatrix” and Djedefre which is located at north of Giza is the symbol of “Saiph”.
However, this is a contradictory theory as some of the issues don’t match with it perfectly. For example, in case of the locations of the pyramids, the Northern part was directed to the bottom while for the Orion belt it was pointed to the top.
So in order to match the starts and the pyramids, the whole map of Egypt has to turn up side down. But with that kind of adjustment, the pyramids don’t fall in the accurate points to match with the “Stellar Netherworld”. But still the concept of representing the huge pyramids as the symbols of these stars does create a lot of appeal.
Conclusion
The debate on the purpose and significance of the “air shafts” of the pyramids is still going on and researchers are continuously trying to get closer to the truth. But it is a fact that these shafts still remain as mysterious features of the ancient Egyptian pyramids that always attracts people from all over the world.
